The joint blocks The huge blocks of sandstone littering the slope at the foot of Nanny Goat Hill are called joint blocks. They occur because the hard sandstone of the upper hill is underlain by much softer rock. Over hundreds of thousands of years, the softer strata are weathered away by the elements, and the sandstone above is undermined and breaks off the hill in chunks. Old Man Banksia (Banksia serrata) and Coastal Banksia (Banksia integrifolia) are a feature of this landscape. |
