Denutrification wetland

The aim of this artificial wetland is to remove excess nutrients and other undesirables from stormwater entering Wolli Creek. The nutrients include garden fertilisers and pet faeces, which encourage the growth of algae and aquatic weeds in Wolli Creek.

Nutrient-removing native plants including Eleocharis (Spikerush), Phragmites (Common reed), Typha (Bullrush) now dominate the wetland. This dense reedy growth is great habitat for small native bird species including superb blue wrens and reed warblers.

At the bridge over the creek below the wetland you can see the removable boards that enable the water level to be varied to simulate the natural water cycle in a wetland. The aim is to prevent the wetland from becoming completely choked by plants.
