at Canterbury Earlwood Caring Centre (CECAL), corner of Lewins and Clarke Sts. Earlwood (enter via Lewins St, opposite Coles carpark)

Two lectures on fantastic fungi by Donald Gover and Dr Ray and Elma Kearney, all
executive members of the Sydney Fungal Studies Group Inc.

An introduction to fungi – Don Gover, followed by questions Tea break (display of posters, books and CDs for sale)

Fantastic fungi: facts and findings – Dr. Ray and Elma Kearney, followed by questions

Wolli Talks 2013 – Thursday May 2, 7.30 pm – A Bennelong bicentenary: A talk by Dr Peter Mitchell

January this year marked the 200th anniversary of Bennelong’s death.

Later this year Ryde Council will be commemorating Bennelong and helping to right a number of historical wrongs.

As a member of Ryde Council’s Heritage Advisory Committee, Dr Peter Mitchell has researched the location of Bennelong’s grave site and believes it has been located in Putney.

Venue: Canterbury and Earlwood Caring Association (CECAL), Earlwood - enter via Lewins St, opposite Coles carpark

Time: 7.30 pm sharp – doors open 7 pm.

Saltmarsh Site inspection – Sunday April 28 Come along and view an important and surprising ecological plant community in the Wolli Valley

A community saltmarsh inspection day is planned for April 28 th, 2013. As it is a fragile environment, we will be viewing the saltmarsh from a vantage point above it. Those attending will be able to see the extent of this important ecological community, see ‘before restoration’ photographs and samples of the key plants that grow there, as well as hear about the value of saltmarsh, and the threats facing it.

Walk the Wolli Valley, Saturday 30th March

Join us for a leisurely 4.5 km walk through the bushland and parklands of the Wolli Valley from Bexley North to Undercliffe on Saturday 30th March 2013 – 8.45 am – approx. 1.30 pm

This will be a guided walk along the Wolli Track of the Two Valley Trail from Bexley North to Wolli Bluff Undercliffe (over looking Waterworth and Gough Whitlam Parks).

The walk has historical and environmental commentary and introduces some of the current issues about the Wolli Valley.

It includes an ascent of Nannygoat Hill, a visit to the Fishway and Flying-fox camp, and a stop at one of the historic stone cottages in Jackson Place, where we will view a video of the 1967 ‘Battle for Nannygoat Hill’ and have a cuppa and snack.

Free to members (you can arrange to join on the day), but advance registration is essential as these walks are popular and numbers are limited. Further information provided following registration.

Western Gateway Bushland walk 10 am Saturday 9 March

Join the Wolli Possum crew for a short stroll through the Western Gateway bushland of Wolli Creek – the 2 hectares menaced by the proposal to build Westconnex.

Meet us on the eastern side of Bexley Road, where it crosses Wolli Creek, just downhill from Bexley North station and across the road.

The walk will only take about 15 minutes, but please feel free to stay around and talk, ask questions etc.

Walking the Western Gateway track; Wolli Valley

Westconnex and other Motorway Madness – Community Forum on Thursday 7th March 7-30-9 pm at Earlwood

Westconnex is high on the O’Farrell Government’s agenda so this is an important forum to come along to and find out about :

- How proposed plans will impact upon the Wolli Regional Park and other areas

- What the alternatives are

- How you can keep informed and help develop action plans to stop these developments. These are expected to destroy precious bushland in the Wolli Valley and residential areas in the inner west, and to take needed funding away from public transport.

There will be a panel, followed by a Q and A session.

Clean Up Australia Day: Sunday 3rd March – Undumping Wolli

Come and join in from 8.30 am and enjoy the transformation we are able to achieve

Location: Meet in the grassy area along Bray Avenue, Earlwood, just downhill from the intersection of Bray and Richard Avenues. Registration from 8.30am at table near the TVT track sign.

What to bring?

This is our very popular kayak trip up Wolli Creek with the River Canoe Club kayaks. Cost $40.

The whole event, which includes an intro to kayaking for beginners, a tour of Turrella Reserve developments and issues, a walk up Nannygoat Hill, plus light food, takes about four hours and shows an unusual aspect of Wolli. Exact starting time yet to be announced
