Two Valley Trail Walk

This walk was officially launched on Sunday 1 June. The Valley has since seen many small groups of self-directed walkers enjoying the Trail.

You too can walk the full 13 km or just a section - lots of public transport options for return.

For more information contact: info@wollicreek.org.au or 9554 3176. To download a copy of a leaflet with map (available in English, Arabic, Chinese, and Korean go to www.tvt.org.au

(The leaflet was designed for the A3 printed version and will be smaller on standard A4 printers)

Greenways - Extending Wolli’s corridor of green

In 2007, a major gap existed in the vegetation corridor in Turrella Reserve, between the weir and Turrella Creek. Project ‘Missing Link’ set out to forge the link from the Henderson St Weir to Turrella Creek with the planting of some 9000 native plants. Read the full brochure here.

Subsequent changes to plans saw an additional ‘stepping stone’ across the reserve created with the reconstruction of the old pond and a substantial part of the planting undertaken in its surrounds. Volunteeer planters from the Society, the community, Community Volunteers Australia, Westpac, Price Waterhouse Coopers, and Finsbury worked on the mulching, planting and watering over a total of 23 planting days between May and November 2008. Well worth a visit to see the rapid progress the native plants are making!

Bat Counting

Date: 3rd Friday of every month

Venue: Turrella Reserve

WCPS members now participate in regular counting of the Wolli Creek population of Grey-headed flying-foxes on the 3rd Friday of every month. This count is synchronised with counts of other bat colonies along the East Coast to get a realistic picture of bat movements and overall bat numbers.

To get involved, email info@wollicreek.org.au or phone 9554 3176. We meet on the Henderson St side of the footbridge over Wolli Creek (Turrella Reserve) but phone to confirm the time as this varies with the seasons.

Volunteer bush restoration work

2009 Meeting arrangements

1st Saturday, 2nd Wednesday, 2nd Sunday and 3rd Saturday of each month

The Wolli Creek Preservation Society carries out a number of bush restoration activities in the Wolli Creek area, with the support of state government grants, Canterbury City Council and some other volunteer arrangements. These activities are primarily within the areas of the developing Wolli Creek Regional Park that are yet to come under the ownership of the National Parks and Wildlife Service, i.e. between Bexley North and Bardwell Park and between Turrella and Tempe. We generally work from 9-12.30 under the supervision of an experienced professional bush regenerator. There are other occasions when we work alongside Conservation Volunteers Australia and corporate-sponsored volunteers on weekdays and some Saturdays, working from about 9 until 3.30.

If you are interested in joining any of these activities please email Peter at info@wollicreek.org.au and provide your phone and email contact details. Details about registration, the nature of the work and meeting places etc can then be provided to you. If you have time available, we are sure to be able to find you one or more occasions that fit your timetable. Come along and try it out before you make any commitment, but it can be a rewarding and sociable time. Prior experience is not necessary and we put on a training day for volunteers from time to time, but most basic things can be learnt 'on the job'. If you have questions before you register, email Peter. We need you to be on our volunteer list as sometimes the weather and other contingencies require late changes to regular arrangements.

Bush Regeneration sessions are currently scheduled for:

August 1, 9, 12, and 15; Sept 5, 9, 13, and 19; Oct 3, 11, 14, and 17.

Initial enquiries via info@wollicreek.org.au or 9554 3176.

Streamwatch teams

Each of our small teams is now regularly sampling water quality (for reporting to Sydney Water’s website) at a location in Bardwell or Wolli Valleys. Teams would welcome additional people along to use their skills or learn new ones. Initial enquiries via info@wollicreek.org.au or 9554 3176

Bird surveys

Each of our several small groups of observers makes a monthly visits to a small area of the Wolli Valley to continue Neil Rankin’s long records of species present and to track changes. No prior experience is required, just a willingness to learn. To get involved email birds@wollicreek.org.au
